an empty chair with the words "student representative" sits at a table full of adults

In a pivotal moment for Rochester Community Unit District #3A, the Board of Education is expanding to now include a Student Representative to the Board of Education. Meaning that for the first time, a student will have a formal seat at the table where they can provide perspective, raise concerns, and ensure that every student's voice is part of key conversations.

The creation of this position underscores the district’s commitment to elevating student voice and preparing future leaders. For students, it’s a rare chance to engage directly in governance, advocacy, and decision-making at the highest level of the district.

A Seat for Students

The Student Representative will serve in an advisory, non-voting role, attending all regular Board of Education meetings and working directly with school leadership to prepare reports. While the representative will not participate in closed sessions or cast votes, their input will be taken into consideration by the Board on matters that directly affect students.

“This addition reflects our belief that students are not just the reason for the decisions we make—they should be partners in those decisions,” said Board President Amy Reynolds.
